Police attempted to storm Kiev's City Hall Wednesday after 12 hours of a push by authorities to try to take back the city. Around 5,000 police tried to remove occupying protesters from the premises under the assault of demonstrators inside and outside the building forcing them to pull back.
Police forces have been clearing areas of demonstrators over night, including a slow and gradual push to remove camps, barricades and crowds from Independence Square. Police have begun to pull back from both Maidan and City Hall, according to the latest reports on the ground.
The administrative building has been occupied by protesters since the beginning of the country's unrest on November 21 when President Viktor F. Yanukovich suspended plans to sign an agreement with the European Union and instead pursue new partnerships with Russia.
